Risk assessments should identify aspects of the environment that need to be checked on a regular basis, when and by whom those aspects will be checked, and how the risk will be removed or minimised.

You must complete a written risk assessment for the areas of your home you will be using for your business when moving to a new property.

It is essential that you carry out regular risk assessments on all areas of your home that you will be using for childminding purposes.

Things to consider when creating your Risk Assessment!

  • Looking for potential hazards that pose a threat to a child’s safety. Things to lock away, and things to keep out of sight/reach.

  • Regularly assessing safety of equipment, ensuring that toys and materials are suitable for the ages of children that you will be caring for.

  • Keeping the kitchen safe and restricting access, and reach of items with necessary measures (e.g. safety gate, cupboard locks etc)

  • The staircase is of a safe design with bannisters for children to hold on to and stair gates securely fitted in the appropriate places.

  • Ensuring that children are adequately supervised according to their age and stage of development.

  • Any rooms not in use by children are secured appropriately

  • The rooms in use are well ventilated and temperature controlled

  • Are toilets accessible for children with appropriate steps/seats in place with appropriate hand washing and drying facilities being provided

  • The layout of the setting takes into consideration facilitation of learning across all 7 areas

This list is not an extensive list so please make sure that you are expanding on all areas of the property and including all of your regular risk points. (toggle the heading arrow above to expand list)

Please do remember to have ...

Appropriate First Aid Kit(s) in place.

Fire blanket or Fire extinguisher in the kitchen

Smoke Alarms in the appropriate places and tested regularly

Ensure that your garden and outdoor space is also safe and suitable for use of childminding if not please notify us and the team can assist you in adding this condition to your registration.

We do expect you to carry out ongoing risk assessments as the designated safeguarding lead of your setting, we visit you every year on QA and visits, remember how you risk assessed your property on your first registration visit / premises review and if you would like any further support from us please do not hesitate to ask any questions to community@tiney.co
