Data security is critical, especially when it comes to children and families. Here's what you can do to keep your own and your family's data safe, and what tiney is doing behind the scenes.
What tiney childminders and parents can do to keep your own and your family's data safe
Use strong, unique passwords — Do not reuse the password you use for the tiney app for any other services. A password manager can make this easier.
Set a strong device passcode — Use a 6-digit passcode (or longer) on your phone or tablet, and turn on Face ID or fingerprint unlock. Never share your device passcode, even with family members. Anyone with it can access every app you're signed in to.
Add an extra lock to the tiney app — For an additional layer of protection, you can require Face ID, Touch ID, a fingerprint or a passcode every time the tiney app is opened. See the step-by-step guide below.
Secure your email account — Most breaches begin with compromised email. Use a strong, separate password for your email. Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) and the highest level of security your email provider offers.
Never share your password, even with colleagues or family members. If others need access, create their own logins rather than sharing yours.
Be cautious with links and attachments — Check the "from" address is legitimate (watch out for misspellings) before clicking anything.
Keep your devices updated — Whether it's your phone, tablet or laptop, install updates promptly to protect against the latest threats.
How to add an extra lock to the tiney app on your phone
This is set up through your phone's own settings. We'd recommend it for any childminder or parent who wants extra peace of mind.
On iPhone (iOS 18 and later) — Press and hold the tiney app icon on your home screen, then tap Require Face ID. Full guide from Apple: Lock or hide an app on iPhone.
On Android — The steps vary a little by manufacturer. For Pixel and stock Android devices, Google's Private space feature lets you hide and lock apps behind a separate authentication step: Hide sensitive apps with private space. Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus and others have their own built-in App lock options, and this guide from Android Authority covers the main ones: How to use a fingerprint to lock apps on Android.
What tiney is doing to protect your data
Hosted by Google Cloud — Our systems run on Google Cloud infrastructure, which offers best-in-class, industry-leading security standards.
Encrypted by default — All photos and personal data are encrypted "at rest," meaning they're securely protected when stored on our servers.
Trusted authentication providers — Sign-in to the tiney app is handled through trusted third-party authentication providers, so your password is never stored directly by us.
Strict access controls — Only a small number of enhanced-DBS-checked team members have access to sensitive data, protected by two-factor authentication and robust Google account security.
Independent security testing — We bring in external cybersecurity experts annually to conduct penetration testing.
We know that families may have questions about how their data is protected. Please feel free to share the above information with parents and guardians.
