How to register with the ICO

As a registered tiney childminder, you have a legal duty to register with the ICO (Information Commissioners Office) as a data controller, and this is something we will check as part of your annual inspection.

ICO registration costs

This will be an annual subscription to pay, and you will be responsible for renewing it each year. The ICO will send you reminders via email.

For childminders the fee will be £52 per year, or £47 per year if you choose to pay by direct debit.

Joint settings

Each childminder needs to register with the ICO individually, even if working from the same setting as another childminder: this is because each sole trader is a data controller.

The registration process

It should take about 10 minutes to complete the registration form and make payment.

If you leave the form partway through, your progress will not be saved, so make sure you have everything you need to complete it before you start.

You will need:

  • your payment card and/or account details for direct debit

  • all the details about your tiney home nursery (your business name, address, etc)

Remember you are filling this form in for your business as a childminder only.

The form can be found at this link: https://ico.org.uk/registration/new

Please be aware that the ICO publish all the information you provide on their website. For more information, you can view their privacy notice.
