How do I record an accident?

Understanding how to record an Accident Journal post

Record any accidents or injuries that happen at your setting, plus any that have happened whilst not in your care, so you can keep guardians informed and up to date, along with keeping your setting compliant.

Understanding recording accidents

Select the accident type: You will be reminded to consider if you need to call the guardian, or tiney, prior to posting about the accident.

  • Accident with Injury e.g. an injury sustained from an accident whilst in your care.

  • Accident with no visible Injury e.g. an accident or incident where there’s no visible injury.

  • Pre-existing Injury e.g. an injury sustained whilst not in your care.

  • Provide details such as a summary, location, what happened, and optionally mark the injury area on a body map.

Note: Once an accident is posted, the parent will be notified immediately and they’ll be prompted to add a comment to say they acknowledge they’ve seen the post.

Edit the date and time

  1. Tap on the date and time field

  2. Scroll to the date and time you want

  3. Tap Done

Add a title to the accident post

  1. Tap on the Title field

  2. Type a short title that summarises the accident/ injury.

  3. Tap outside of the field or press Return on the keyboard

Note: The title of the accident is what is shown on the feed post.

Add the location of where it happened

  1. Tap on the Location field

  2. Type a short description of where the accident/ injury happened. e.g. trampoline in garden

  3. Tap outside of the field or press Return on the keyboard

Add detailed information about how the accident happened

  1. Tap on the What happened field

  2. Type as much detail as possible about how the accident/ injury occurred.

  3. Tap Done

Mark the injury location (if applicable to the accident type)

  1. Tap on the Body map field

  2. Select either the Front of Back of the body (you can mark an injury on both sides)

  3. Tap to place a circle on the injured location(s).

  4. Tap Clear to start again

  5. Tap Save

  6. If you need to edit once saved, tap on the body map image to edit.

Add a description of the injury (if applicable to the accident type)

  1. Tap on the Description field

  2. Type as much detail as possible about the injury that occurred.

  3. Tap Done

Add a action point

  1. Tap on the Action field

  2. Type as much detail as possible about what you have done/ will do as a result of the accident/ injury.

  3. Tap Done

Preview and save (for later)

  1. Tap Preview

  2. Read and check your post, you can press Back to edit.

  3. Tap Save

Note: The accident post will be saved to your Drafts.

Preview and post to Journal

  1. Tap Preview

  2. Read and check your post, you can press Back to edit.

  3. Tap Post

Note: Once an accident is posted, the parent will be notified immediately and they’ll be prompted to add a comment to say they acknowledge they’ve seen the post.

Edit a published Accident post

  1. Find the published post in the child’s Journal feed

  2. Tap on the ‘More icon […]

  3. Select Edit

  4. Make any edits as required, preview and tap Update

Note: Yourself and the guardian will see the updated post instantly. The guardian will not be notified that the post has been updated.

Delete a published Accident post

  1. Find the published post in the child’s Journal feed

  2. Tap on the ‘More icon […]

  3. Select Delete

  4. Confirm you want to delete the post by tapping Delete

Note: The post will be removed from your feed and the guardian’s feed. The guardian will not be notified that the post has been deleted.

Can I create multiple Accident posts at the same time?

No, the accident post type can only be used for one child as it is a sensitive post individual to each child.

What will the child’s guardian see?

When guardians open the app, they’ll be able to see the list of journal entries exactly as you see them.

Can others at my setting create Accident posts?

Yes! All registered childminders and assistants at your setting have access to create Accident posts.
